1.5 Confidence Vs Competence

The goal of learning any self defence system is to increase confidence. However, confidence is not the same as competence.

With self defences we need to become competent at the movements we are learning, regardless of how simple they are. This is true for most things in life. However, for self defence this can be practically dangerous.

Confidences without competence can manifest themselves in a few ways:

  1. Locational, meaning you might think you don't need an alarm for your house because you live in a nice area. Your confidence is high because ‘that’ type of person doesn't live around here. When in reality, your location is a prime target for people that identify your location with thinking they're safer than they really are.

  2. When being around people, your confident that ‘that’ person won't ever do x. When looking at gender-based violence, this is not necessarily true when in 2020 in the UK, 92% of all violent attacks towards women was initiated by a man who they new

  3. Learning stuff, the reality is once you think you know something (especially if you have only been studying something for a short time), you are not necessarily competent at it

This is here because I hope your self defence development will not stop here, its as important as your personal or your career development, and out of the 3 it's the one that can save your life or your family lives
